Sandy Litchfield is an artist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Architecture at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She teaches courses that lie at the intersection of art, architecture, design and writing. Her studio practice– which focuses on contemporary representations of landscape and urban ecology­– includes painting, collage installation, and public art. Her imaginary landscapes are built using collaged images (both digital and analog) derived from old maps and photographs. These are then integrated with a painterly process that emphasizes color, shape relationships, directional movement and composition.

Litchfield’s work has been exhibited in numerous museums including the DeCordova Museum, The Portland Art Museum and The Hunterdon Museum. Litchfield is a recipient of the Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship and the Puffin Foundation Artists Grant Award. In 2007 she attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. She’s had solo exhibitions at Carroll and Sons Gallery in Boston, Metaphor Contemporary Art in Brooklyn as well as several New England Colleges. Her work has been selected for review by The Brooklyn Rail, New American Paintings and The Boston Globe.
