Literary Magazine Intern Overview GCC revitalized Plum, it's literary magazine, last year. Students are now being recruited to create, market, and distribute the next edition. Anyone with an interest in writing and/or visual arts is encouraged to apply. Intern Responsibilities Interns will meet as a group, along with the supervisor/professor, at a regular time, once a week; the meeting will be in person, and the day and time each week will be determined at the start of the semester based on the availability of interns and supervisor/professor. Interns will meet individually with the supervisor/professor, at least twice during the semester. Interns will meet with one another as needed throughout the semester in order to collaborate on tasks related to publishing Plum. Interns will also work individually. The group will develop a timeline for production and delineate tasks; the assignment of tasks will be based on the skills and experience of each intern, as well as Plum-related production needs. Interns will utilize skills they already have and learn new skills as well. All interns will earn 2 credits, completing 90 hours of work in the spring semester. Grades for the internship will be based in large part on the final quality of the journal, as well as the following: attendance and productivity at weekly meetings; quality of independent and team work carried out, as planned and on schedule; weekly journals/logs/reflection sheets; and an interview with a community member who has related experience (as an editor, artist, creative writer, or publisher). Preferred Qualifications Matriculated student with at least 12 GCC credits completed. Strong interest in writing and/or visual arts. Ability to collaborate effectively, communicate clearly, and meet deadlines. Hours Per Week 5-10 Desired Outcomes By the end of the semester, and the publication of Plum, student interns will be able to do the following: Develop a basic familiarization with college-level literary publications. Develop a general understanding of the creative process—in art, writing, and/or design. Collaboratively produce an issue of Plum, GCC’s literary journal. Work as a team with other interns, the supervisor/professor, and potentially volunteers. Analyze and evaluate submissions of art and creative writing. Communicate clearly and professionally—in writing—with artists and writers. Writing responsibilities may vary from one intern to the next but will include acknowledging submissions, indicating acceptance or rejection of submissions, and maintaining ongoing communication with artists and writers, as needed. Identify successful means of promoting the publication—both in terms of seeking submissions and sharing the final product—at GCC and in the broader community. Carry out publicity to promote Plum (posters, online bulletin announcements, in-class and event announcements, etc.; again, individuals may focus on one or many of these). Provide editorial feedback and copyedit. In collaboration with the GCC Library, plan, publicize, carry out, and participate in a public reading event. Compensation Unpaid
