Institutional Disability Services Syllabus Statement

Faculty governed by the Day Agreement are required to include the Institutional Disability Services statement in their syllabus. Adjunct instructors are strongly encouraged to include a statement in their syllabus suggesting that students with disabilities discuss their needs with them.

The following is a recommended syllabus statement. This statement acknowledges that not all barriers are due to disability and/or need to be accommodated—you may prefer to address them through your instructional practices.

Greenfield Community College values inclusion and equal access to its programs and activities and is committed to fostering an environment of respect and full participation. Our goal is to create learning environments that are equitable, inclusive, and welcoming. If there are aspects of the instruction or design of this course that result in barriers to your inclusion or accurate assessment or achievement, please notify the instructor as soon as possible.  If you are a student with a disability and may need reasonable academic accommodations, please contact the Office of Disability Services (ODS) as soon as possible to discuss your needs and options. For more information, visit the ODS website https://www.gcc.mass.edu/ds/ or call (413) 775-1332. The ODS is located on the fourth floor of the Core in C423.

Here are some more inclusive ideas for headings for the above statement in your syllabi:

  • Diversity & Disability Statement
  • Accessibility & Accommodations
  • Usability, Disability & Design
  • Statement of Inclusion & Access

The idea is to invite all students to read the statement, not just students with disabilities, because there may be other barriers to inclusion that would be useful to be aware of.
