Happy National Nurses Week! GCC alum Rachel M. Porter, BSN, RN, says, "As a graduate of the GCC ADN Program, Class of 2013, I would, and have, recommend the nursing program to anyone interested in becoming a nurse. The education I received at GCC prepared me to work as a nurse. After 10 years as a floor nurse, I now teach at GCC in the Practical Nursing Program. I wanted to be part of the amazing nursing staff of GCC." Thank you to all the nurses out working in this incredibly important field, and to all our nursing students preparing to enter it!

Spring Week at GCC was a vibrant success—made even better by the gorgeous weather! The week kicked off with a sustainable twist as students learned how to mend clothes instead of tossing them, thanks to Swanson’s Fabrics Stash House. Tuesday brought a hands-on Garden Clean Up in the Outdoor Learning Lab to prep for planting season. On Wednesday, students enjoyed Field Day with games, a food truck and a Labyrinth Clean Up to help restore this peaceful campus space. Thursday wrapped things up with Bike Day in celebration of Bay State Bike Month, featuring helpful info and bike maintenance tips from FRCOG and MassBike, plus live music from the GCC Beatles and Radiohead Ensemble. Big thanks to everyone who joined the fun and helped make Spring Week so special!

#CCMonth is a chance to honor the determination, resilience and growth that community college students embody every day. At GCC, stories like Cyrene Blanchard’s remind us why these institutions matters and how powerful second chances can be.

"Choosing Greenfield Community College was the best decision I ever made because it gave me a second chance, not just at education, but at believing in myself. Life has thrown me some difficult challenges, and for a while, I wasn’t sure I’d ever find my footing again. But at GCC, I found a supportive community that welcomed me without judgment and encouraged me to keep going."

Every student brings a story, a dream and a strength that adds to the fabric of our college. Thank you, Cyrene, for sharing your story. #BestDecisionEver

Did you know that GCC is home to one of the best-in-the-world examples of one of Earth`s rarest geologic features? If you take a walk down our Geology Path, you`ll see 200-million-year-old Jurassic armored mud balls (or JAMBs) on display for you to appreciate alongside our other rocks showing a half-billion years of our local geologic history.

GCC Professor Emeritus Richard Little explains their formation like this: "Imagine a Jurassic thunderstorm that generated a flash flood. Mud stream banks eroded. Pieces fell into the rushing current becoming round and coated (armored) with streambed pebbles. As the flood subsided, these delicate sedimentary structures were buried in sandy sediment, protecting them from drying and disintegrating. With deeper burial and geologic time, the layers lithified, becoming solid rock. In Jurassic times, the Connecticut Valley area was part of a large rift valley, much like Death Valley today. Conditions were just right with mud, floods, and sediment to form and preserve these rare structures in the bedrock of Turners Falls, Gill, Greenfield and Deerfield."

Take a walk down our Geology Path to appreciate them for yourself!

We`re still in National Community College Month! Let`s celebrate what makes GCC and all community colleges special. Did you know 46% of Massachusetts college students attend community colleges? These institutions are game-changers, paving paths to higher education and better futures.

GCC graduates earn significantly more, pursue further education and contribute to vibrant local economies. With Massachusetts` new free community college programs, GCC`s enrollment has jumped 31% since 2022! We live up to our motto of "you belong here" everyday, proving education is for all. Now more than ever, our community is building brighter futures.

President Michelle Schutt wrote in her message to the community, "Everywhere I go, I am told by current and former students that choosing to go to GCC has been one of the best decisions they ever made... I extend my heartfelt gratitude for the work of the staff, faculty and students that help change family trees and build brighter futures for everyone." #BestDevisionEver #CCMonth
