The food system is the network of farms, businesses, institutions, and public services that bring food to people. Key steps include food’s production, processing, storage, distribution, preparation, and waste recovery, plus adequate land, infrastructure, and education. By strengthening local food systems, we can support farmers, improve the local economy, and engage the community in a fight for better food and better health. As a Local Food Systems intern, you will choose several aspects of the food system to explore by serving at Mount Grace and a choice of two other community organizations on a weekly schedule that fits your availability and interests. For example, you might grow vegetable starts for Mount Grace’s school gardens, join a town committee to promote the farmer’s market, and help a food pantry connect with local farmers to distribute unsold produce.
