Learning Management System (LMS) – MOODLE

GCC's learning management system (LMS) is Moodle, which is installed and managed on GCC's servers. Courses listed in the schedule have Moodle course shells created automatically. Faculty have access to their Moodle course shells on the day priority registration opens for students.

Expectations for Faculty Teaching Fully Online Courses

Pre-semester — Information and guidelines are sent to faculty the week prior to the first day of classes on how to make a course available in Moodle. If you need assistance setting up an online course, contact the Director of Teaching and Learning Innovation or (413) 775-1867 or submit an IT help request.

First day of class — All fully online courses automatically are available at 8am on the first day of classes.
On the first day of classes, at a minimum, each course should provide the syllabus, instructor contact information, an overview of the course and expectations, and a welcome announcement that gives the students information on what they can expect for the first week or two of the course.

On-going expectations for online courses — GCC prides itself on student interaction with faculty members. This practice is embedded in GCC's mission and supports one of NECHE's criteria for an online course. Therefore, the expectation is that instructors communicate with their students through announcements, assignments, discussions, journals, chat, and/or other means on a regular basis.

Moodle Course Shell and Online Student Learning Orientation — At the top of every Moodle page, there are two menus:
"Student Support Links" point to relevant college offices for students

"GCC Links" point to relevant IT and Moodle faculty resources including the "Moodle Users" classroom which provides tutorials on using the LMS.
