Artificial Intelligence ID: 777 This policy outlines the guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the GCC’s nursing programs to ensure ethical, appropriate and effective integration of AI tools in nursing education while maintaining academic integrity and patient safety. This policy applies to all nursing students, faculty and staff and covers all forms of AI technology, including but not limited to: Generative AI tools/Large Language Models AI tools embedded in platforms used nursing programs Permitted Uses of AI Technology Students, faculty and staff must critically evaluate AI-provided information for accuracy and reliability. All work submitted must reflect the individual’s understanding and original thought. Educational Support Study planning Summarizing concepts Generating practice questions Only the GCC-provided Google Suite (Gemini, LM Notebook), with GCC credential login, may be used for content uploads Clinical Learning Faculty-approved AI simulation platforms may be used for clinical practice scenarios Research and Writing Basic AI writing tools (spell-check, grammar-check without content generation) Brainstorming To provide feedback on a draft the individual wrote in comparison to assignment requirements Organizing or formatting the presentation of materials that were created independently Faculty Use Brainstorming test questions, with full oversight Automating administrative tasks Visual concepts for teaching Organizing or formatting original content Specific course assignments or activities may allow wider use of AI. In these cases, approved use will be clearly communicated. Prohibited Uses of AI Technology AI-generated work presented as individual work is a violation of academic integrity standards, including failure to fully disclose and describe the use of AI. Uploading another person’s original content into any public platform constitutes an ethics violation. Educational Support Uploading faculty content into publicly published platforms (e.g. Quizlet, Slideshare) Uploading quiz or test questions into any online platform To complete homework, quizzes or exams Clinical Learning Students must not rely on AI for clinical decision-making. AI is a support tool and does not replace critical thinking or professional judgment Care plans and journals must be fully original work Patient data can never be uploaded into AI platforms Research and Writing To generate, draft, or edit any portion of your work For research, analysis, or interpretation To explain research articles to you To assist with peer editing To generate citations or other references To add in personal stories or perspectives To complete the assignment, even if you edit afterward Faculty Use Employees must only use gcc.mass.edu accounts for official GCC activities such as communication, documentation and data analysis. Personal or free AI accounts must not be used for any work involving confidential, student, or institutional information. For more information about permitted and prohibited faculty use, see the GCC AI/Gemini Policy. Accountability and Consequences Evaluation of Work/Citation of AI Technology The following are examples of suspicious AI use: Work does not follow assignment requirements and guidelines Lack of personal voice Factual inaccuracies Hallucinated citations or citation components Inability of the writer to clearly speak to presented work Individuals must be prepared to verbally describe their original thoughts and show evidence of their sources. Disciplinary Actions All cases of suspected or confirmed academic dishonesty will be reported to the college. Initial violations will not result in automatic failure of a course. Students will be given an opportunity for remediation. Repeated violations will result in consequences aligned with the GCC Code of Conduct. Policy Review This policy will be reviewed annually to adapt to emerging AI technologies and their implications in nursing education and practice. Artificial Intelligence Attestation The following attestation is required as an appendix to every written assignment. Additionally, all AI use must include an APA citation and a full description of the prompts entered and changes made. I attest that I ( did / did not ) utilize artificial intelligence (AI) tools or content in the creation of this assignment. I understand that misuse of AI constitutes academic dishonesty.
