Grievances (Student Rights)

ID: 553

GCC adheres to the system-wide Massachusetts Community colleges Student Grievance Procedure for dispute resolution. Students are responsible for understanding this policy.

Before invoking the student grievance procedure, a reasonable effort shall be made by those involved in a dispute to resolve it amicably. A dispute is most effectively handled and resolved by those closest to the problem, having the best understanding of the issues, and having the ability to formulate a mutually acceptable resolution. Therefore, it is in the best interest of the student, the potential subject of a grievance, and the college to resolve disputes through open and cooperative dialogue. It is appropriate to initiate consultation with the dean of nursing before progressing to further levels within the grievance policy. Only when such efforts are unsuccessful should the student grievance procedure be invoked.

For nursing programs, the following steps outline the grievance process for nursing students:

  1. Meet with the faculty involved
  2. Meet with course/program cordinator and/or advisor
  3. Meet with the Dean
  4. Follow specific steps in the student handbook for grievances

Nursing students have the same rights and responsibilities granted to all GCC students as described in the Student Code of Conduct.
